Peggy Baker is one of the most popular and richest Choreographer who was born on October 22, 1952 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Peggy Laurayne Baker (nee Smith born on October 22, 1952) is a Canadian contemporary dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She was given an honorary Order of Canada and she was the first person to be awarded the Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.

In 1993, she was selected to become Canadian National Ballet School’s very first artist-in residence.

In 2010 the Canada Council for the Arts presented Baker with the Walter Carsen Prize.

She established The Peggy Baker Dance Projects to explore individual dance expression. In 1993, she was hired by the National Ballet of Canada as its inaugural artist-in-residence who taught, choreographed as well as stage Lar Lubovitch’s works.

Baker got to know her spouse Ahmed Hassan in the 1970s during the time he composed some of Baker’s works. They got married in 1990, and remained together until the time of his death in 2011. from multiple MS.

Baker initially studied acting in The University of Alberta. There, Baker was exposed to Modern Dance by Patricia Beatty who was one of the founding members for the Toronto Dance Theatre. In 1971, she moved to Toronto to learn from Beatty in The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. After graduating from the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, she joined the company as dancer. In 1974 she co-founded the Dancemakers Dance Company. In 1980, she relocated into New York City to dance with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. In 1990, she joined Mikhail Baryshnikov’s dance group White Oak Dance Project which gave her a new direction as a choreographer and dancer. She performed her first solo concert in 1990 called Le Charme d l’Impossible. The show was commissioned by the Canada Dance Festival and premiered at the Winnipeg Dance Festival.

In 2006 Baker was awarded the Order of Canada and in 2007 she was the first person to receive the Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.
