Pichardo Pichardo 18.06 m (59 feet 3 inches) (0.9 meters per second) on May 15th in 2015 in the Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar. This puts him as the top 3 athlete ever. Alongside Christian Taylor also jumping 18.04 meters (59 feet 2 inches) seconds later in Doha it was the first time ever to see two athletes jump over 18 metres. It has been described as “the greatest triple jump competition ever.” The jump of 18.06 m was also an improvement on his personal Cuban record by 17.94 m (58 feet 10/4 inches) that was set a week before in Havana. The record was erased Yoelbi Quesada’s almost 18-year-old record. It already placed Pichardo in the top of all time’s top ten list at number 6.
In April 2017, Pichardo disappeared from the Cuban national team’s meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, appearing days later in Portugal. Shortly after, on 27 April, he signed a contract with Portuguese club S.L. Benfica. He gained Portuguese citizenship on 7 December that year and is eligible to compete for Portugal on the international stage starting from 1 August 2019. Therefore, the first major competition in which Pichardo will represent the Portuguese colours will be during the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
On May 28, 2015 Pichardo was able to jump 18.08 m (59 3/4 inches)) (0.0 milliseconds) during the Copa Cuba Memorial Barrientos event in Havana and improved on his Cuban national record set two weeks before by 2 centimeters.
