Pavlo Lazarenko is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 23, 1953 in Karlivka, Ukraine. His father Ivan Tryfonovych was born in 1926 in Hnidyn Village, Boryspil Raion. The day after his birth, He and his parents moved to Kherson region. The father of Ivan Tryfonovych had a job as market-gardener. In 1932 , the family relocated to Karpivka where the family’s great-grandfather Tryfon created an agricultural market of 34 ha (84 acres). In 1944, he went to the front and never returned. Ivan Tryfonovych also became a gardener and set up a second garden in Karpivka, which is five hundred and sixty-five acres (1,400 acres). In 1954, he was made as the head of a village kolkhoz and later, a kolkhoz in the village that was adjacent. In 1956, Ivan Tryfonovych joined the ranks of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

After graduating, Lazarenko was awarded a specialization of Agronomist. From 1978 until 1983, he was an Agronomist, Chief Agronomist and also as head of kolkhoz administration at the Kalinin kolkhoz, Novomoskovsk Raion.

He acquired majority of his illegal funds through his activities in the gas and energy sector of Ukraine, where he was Energy Minister in the mid-1990s. He was reported by Radio Free Europe to have been guilty of money laundering in the United States and has routinely been on Transparency International’s lists of most corrupt officials.

Lazarenko is a recipient of the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise in 1995 and two orders of Saint Volodymyr from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Lazarenko’s elder brother Mykola served as director for the Hnidyn rural council between 1975 and 1986 and later , in the Inhulets Ore Enrichment Works. His younger brother Ivan worked for one of the agriculture-related companies in the Novomoskovsk Raion.

Lazarenko, who had no previous record of serious illness, was unexpectedly hospitalized in late June 1997. It is speculated that he spent the two weeks of the leave for his supposed sickness in vain attempts to mend fences with Kuchma.
