The following year, He directed a noir movie called Omerta and began writing his most ambitious novel, The Companion. The Companion took more than six years working on it and then securing the financial support needed to realize it. This film was chosen to be the Cuban entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. As he worked on the film, he also co-directed the film, Playing Lecuona the musical documentary film on the most famous legendary figure in Cuban musical history, Ernesto Lecuona, starring jazz musicians Michel Camilo, Chucho Valdes and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

In the year 2019, he was acting coach for the star Penelope Cruz in Wasp Network which was a film directed by Olivier Assayas. He taught her for over three months on how to speak as the Cuban woman, and also modified all of her lines from the script to the Cuban style of speaking.

Pavel Giroud is a Cuban film director who is based in Madrid, Spain. He has studied design at the Instituto Superior de Diseno (High Institute of Design) in 1994.

From 2012 until 2019, He was part of Fine Arts collective Los Carpinteros, directing all of their films (except for one work). Following the dissolution of this organization, Giroud has continues working with one of its members, Dagoberto Rodriguez, directing an experimental video entitled “Geometria Popular”, released online by the Sabrina Amrani Gallery in March of 2020.

Giroud only filmed what he wrote, until he read the script of the movie La Edad de la peseta, written by Arturo Infante, a young screenwriter and director. “When I first read the script, I didn’t see in this movie the possibility to express myself as a director”. However, he gradually and simply fell in love with the script and the movie, “Now, I tell Arturo that it’s my film not his, and that he should forget he wrote it…” He finished La Edad de la peseta in 2006. When film critics saw the movie, they dubbed Pavel the “new Cuban Truffaut” and “the finest director of his generation”. In 2020 this film was selected by Cuban Cinematheque as one of ten Best Cinematography and Best Production Design in 60 years of Cuban Cinema.
