Pavel Fischer (born 26 August 1965) is a Czech politician and diplomat who has served as the Senator of Prague 12 since the year 2018. Fischer was previously the Czech ambassador to France from 2003 until 2010. Fischer ran for president in this year’s Czech presidential election and was in third place , with 10.23 percent of the vote. He was later selected to be a member of his seat in the Czech Senate at the time of the 2017 Senate elections. After his election to the Senate the senator announced that he would run in this year’s Czech president’s election.
Fischer is in favor of a closer Integration of the Czech Republic with the European Union and is in favor of a more open approach to the West, and being able to strengthen the bonds with Europe as well as Europe and the United States. He has stated his desire to play a role of unification in domestic politics, particularly between the parliament, government and the society. He also stated his belief that Emmanuel Macron would be the most preferred candidate to lead France’s Czech Republic in the 2017 French presidential election.
In October 2018 he was elected to the Czech Senate, and subsequently announced his candidacy for the next Presidential election.
Fischer was the subject of controversy on the 16th of December when he declared that he was not going to appoint gay judges for the Constitutional Court. Fischer later apologized for his declaration.
