In October of 2010 she decided to resign the Ulster Unionist Party membership, after which she told in the Belfast Telegraph, “I just couldn’t stay in a party that’s sexist, homophobic and sectarian so I resigned.” She referenced comments from Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliott who claimed that he wouldn’t be able to attend Pride or an GAA match and also her treatment during a decision where members had doubted her eligibility to become an Assembly member as a single mother.
