When Jackson Asiku made the decision to renounce his title, Truscott was in line to be a contender for an open belt in the commonwealth featherweight division. While he’s never been longer than 8 rounds prior to the fight, Truscott defeated a tough Ghanaian Osumana Akaba with a score of 12 to take the title. Following the fight, a tearful Truscott declared “I can’t explain what it means…I’ve shoved all the setbacks I had as an amateur down everyone’s throats and proved them all wrong…And I’ve showed that you can achieve things when you come from Middlesbrough and be someone.”
Truscott came back to the fight ring the month of October and fought Armenian boxer Alex Miskirtchian (13-1-1) in Burton. The bout was non-title and lasted eight rounds, and proved to be a great test for the fighter , who improved his overall record from 12-0 to 12-0 after another victory on points. The first time he defended his Commonwealth title took place in January 2009 and finished with disappointment as he lost to the former British champion John Simpson. The fight was stopped in the eighth round after an incident between heads caused the referee to end the fight according to the direction of the doctor at the ringside giving the title on to Scotsman. Truscott was back in the arena on June, and took home a six-rounder victory over Kostin. Russian Andrey Kostin on September 4, 2009, becoming the first fighter to defend Simpson’s belt that he had just won. It was a disappointment for Truscott after he was given a standing score in the 9th, the fight was ended in the 10th round, handing a second victory to the Scot as both fighters engaged in the fight in a fast pace.

Truscott made his debut as a professional in June 2006 in his debut at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, after he beat veteran traveller Billy Smith. The first fight he fought professionally in his home town of Middlesbrough was the one following Truscott defeated Steve Gethin at the Eston Sports Academy and the two wins coming in four rounds.
