Paul Scott Teller (born February 21st 1971) was an ex-Chairman of Senator Ted Cruz and former Executive Director of the United States House of Representatives Republican Study Committee. Teller was identified in an article in the Washington Post profile as “one of the most influential conservative aides in Congress.” In the wake of the actions taken by him and his subordinates in the course of 2011’s U.S. debt ceiling crisis, Republican members of the House of Representatives reportedly chanted “fire him, fire him” at the Republican Conference meeting in the early morning on July 27 in 2011. In a report published shortly following the appointment of Teller to be the Sen. Cruz’s chief of staff, The Hill described Teller as “Cruz’s agitator in chief.” He is a respected and well-known politician. Teller has earned accolades and admiration from the conservative community throughout his tenure. His organization, the Heritage Foundation, considered by many to be the most influential think tank for conservatives within the United States, described Teller as “A dynamic conservative leader who is trusted and respected by conservatives on Capitol Hill and amongst outside groups. His role in the White House has been critical since the beginning and this step will make him even more effective.” In February of 2020 The Washington Examiner reported Paul Teller was appointed by Vice-President Mike Pence as Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Vice President. He was resigned from his former post within the White House Office of Legislative Affairs.
The year 2012 was the time that Paul Teller was named one of Roll Call’s “Fabulous 50,” a list of the top Capitol Hill Democratic as well as Republican staffers. Roll Call selected him in particular because of their “Mastery,” awarded to Hill’s procedural and policy experts, as well as “Spin,” given to Congress top communicators who are able to establish the tone and define the discussion.
In early 2014, Senator Ted Cruz hired Paul Teller as his new deputy chief of staff. Sen. Cruz stated that “Paul’s many years of experience working in Congress and his tireless work to advance conservative principles make him a tremendous addition to our team.” On September 10, 2014, Senator Cruz announced that Teller would take over the role of Chief of Staff following former Chief of Staff Chip Roy’s transition from the Senator’s federal office to take on the role of senior advisor for the Senator’s political operations.
In 2014, Teller joined the Board of Advisors of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies. He is a member of the Council for National Policy.
Teller was at the center of controversy in the course of 2011’s U.S. debt ceiling crisis when, in July of 2011 the president and his staff were reported to have emailed a number of conservative groups, urging the groups to oppose the plan proposed by House Speaker House John Boehner. When the emails were debated in the Republican conference in July 27th, 2011 that Teller attended, participants of the meeting were heard shouting “fire him, fire him”. Unidentified Republican staff members had a scathing attack on Teller for the what they called his “aggressive language and willingness to attack Republicans,” as an anonymous senior GOP advisor argued it was “coordinating on message and revving up conservative activists is not, in and of itself, a bad thing.” Although it was reported that staff members chanted “fire him, fire him” to Paul Teller during the closed doors meeting, more reports were released that revealed the event was fabricated and exaggerated in the press, and some said it was not the case at all.
