Paul Martin Rutgers (born 17 January 1984) is an Australian and South African baseball player who was a part of his team in the Minnesota Twins organisation and both South Africa and Australia.
Paul was then able to make his debut in his Australian senior team at the 2005 Baseball World Cup. He scored an impressive .385/.385/.538 as the team’s primary left fielder. For the 2005 Claxton Shield, the Victoria native was able to hit .333/.394/.533 with six RBI in seven games. Rutgers was named to the Australian team to play in 2006’s World Baseball Classic but only was able to bat twice during the tournament. He was placed in the role of a pinch- hitter for Tom Brice against the Dominican Republic getting a hit
In the 2007 Claxton Shield, Paul batted .296/.406/.481 to help Victoria win the Shield; he won the second base Gold Glove. Back with Chillicothe, Rutgers hit .254/.346/.387 with 22 doubles. Rutgers played well again in the 2008 Claxton Shield, hitting .319/.429/.489 with 15 runs in 12 games to lead the tournament in runs scored.
Rutgers was on South Africa’s roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. In the Classic, he went one for eight but got South Africa’s lone extra-base hit, a double off of Mexico’s Elmer Dessens.
It was his team, his team, the Swing of the Quad Cities during a very disappointing 2004 season. He bet better at home in the year 2005. Rutgers was hired to the Twins in 2001. He debuted at the minor level in 2002, playing for the GCL Twins, hitting .244/.270/.267 in just 31 games as a 2B backup in the absence of Jose Morales. The Twins signed him to make the Claxton Shield debut in the 2003 Claxton Shield for the Victoria Aces.
When he played in the Gulf Coast League in 2003 the player hit .353/.388/.443 with the Twins which was third to last in the GCL in terms of average. He was selected on the GCL All-Star team as an infielder. He also played for Victoria at the time of the 2004 Claxton Shield.
