William Paul Moriarty (born 16 July 1964) is a Welsh former international rugby union player and a rugby league footballer. He played for the rugby union club Swansea and also represented Wales before joining the rugby league club Widnes and winning the 1989 World Club Challenge, and also representing Great Britain.

Following the departure of coach John Plumtree on November 1, 2001 Moriarty was promoted to coach-player, and, together and Tony Clement, ensured Swansea were able to participate in The 2002-03 Heineken Cup despite being fourth in the Welsh-Scottish League at the time they assumed the role of coach.

He became head coach of Principality Welsh Premiership champions Cardiff for the 2009–10 season, and although the Arms Park club qualified for the playoffs despite only finishing seventh, they fell at the first hurdle to Llanelli. On 21 May 2010, Guinness Premiership club Newcastle Falcons announced that they had appointed Moriarty as an assistant coach to his former Widnes teammate Alan Tait.

Moriarty returned to the union after the code officially became professional and joined Swansea. In the following year, due to an injury issue for the Welsh rugby league team’s forward line at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup the 36-year-old Moriarty was summoned to the team.

A back rower or second front rower, A.J. Moriarty played union at Swansea RFC, and was included in the Wales team in 1987’s Rugby World Cup, helping Wales to finish third and scoring a score in the 22-21 third-place play-off win against Australia.

Moriarty switched his codes of rugby football that were rugby union into league after he joined champions Widnes. He was chosen to be on the bench of interchange in the team of Widnes when they won their World Club Challenge victory over the Canberra Raiders. Moriarty was also selected with his country’s Great Britain Lions against Papua New Guinea in 1991, and France the following year. He moved to Widnes to Halifax during 1995-94 Rugby Football League season, and was a part of the Wales team to play in the 1995 Rugby League World Cup, and also was a player with South Wales on loan.

The Introduction of regional rugby union teams in Wales took place in time for the 2003–04 season, at which time Moriarty joined the Llanelli Scarlets as forwards coach, becoming part of then-head coach Gareth Jenkins’ backroom staff. He remained at the club throughout the following tenures of Phil Davies and Nigel Davies.
