Paul Moon Biography

Paul Moon is one of the most popular and richest Historian who was born on October 18, 1968 in Auckland, Auckland Region, New Zealand. Paul Moon was born in Auckland The father of Evan Moon, a solicitor as well as Dragica Moon (nee Pavlicevic) who immigrated from New Zealand from Montenegro in 1966. The family of his father came from Sussex to New Zealand from Sussex, in the late 1880s. Paul Moon became involved with the creation and development of The Auckland Star newspaper.

Moon is known for his work on his research on the Treaty of Waitangi, and has written two volumes on the subject. Moon has also written biography of the governors William Hobson and Robert FitzRoy as well as the Nga Chief Hone Heke from the Puhi tribe. The year 2003 was the time he released The tohunga book Tohunga: Hohepa Kereopa, an explanation of tohunga in the Ngai Tuhoe. Moon has also written an important biography of the Nga Puhi political leader and politician Hone Ngapua (1869-1909) and published Fatal Frontiers – a history of New Zealand in the 1830s. Alongside publishing books, Moon frequently contributes to international and national academic journals that cover a wide range of topics related to history.

Paul Moon identifies as a Congregationalist, and in July 2007 completed a history of Three Kings Congregational Church, in Mt. Roskill, Auckland, for its centenary. Moon’s wife, Milica, is Serbian Orthodox.

Moon’s 2008 book This Horrid Practice, in which he discusses cannibalism amongst historical Māori, has also drawn criticism. It sparked accusations that Moon was demonising Maori, and some argued the book was “a return to Victorian values”. Moon hit back in a newspaper article in which he accused the critics of the book of attempting to censor him. He also was critical of some of the superficial commentaries made by particular academics, and noted that many people had criticised the book before it had even been released.

Moon’s 2001 biography of Hone Heke caused a major controversy because of its treatment of Bishop Jean Baptiste Pompallier, whom Moon described as ‘seditious’ and ‘treasonous’ – a view fellow historian Michael King rejected as “Absolute nonsense…reflecting the anti-Catholic prejudices widespread among Protestant missionaries at the time”.
