In the month of March, Barbadoro came in from New Hampshire as a visiting judge to decide on the case of the former Governor of Puerto Rico Anibal Acevedo Vila. The governor was indicted for 21 federal charges. Due to the extensive coverage of the this case in local media, it was decided that Barbadoro was the best option for the case. On the 13th of July of 2016 United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts appointed Barbadoro to chair the Executive Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States. The Conference regularly meets twice per year to examine matters of policy and administration that affect the court system and also to provide recommendations to Congress regarding legislation that affects those in the Judicial Branch.

At the time of his appointment Barbadoro was the youngest person to ever be appointed an federal judge. The president nominated him by George H. W. Bush on September 9, 1992 for a position in the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire which was vacated from Judge Shane Devine. His confirmation was granted by the United States Senate on October 8th, 1992. He was appointed the following day. He was chief judge from 1997 until 2004.
