Alongside the rest of his family members, he emigrated from the Azores to Canada at the age of 1979. They moved to Brampton, Ontario. Ferreira attended both primary and secondary school in the Brampton region and then continued to study in Ontario’s Carleton University. Ferreira is an honors student at the Carleton University’s School of Journalism, where there were awards given to him for academic excellence and involvement in the community. In the spring of 2004, Paul Ferreira became the NDP’s candidate for the federal election for the West-End Toronto York South-Weston riding. The main opposition was incumbent Liberal MP (MP) and the former Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto chair Alan Tonks. The major issues that dominated the election, which did not just pertain to York South Weston, was frustration over the governing Liberal party’s sponsorship scandal and Health care. Also, the first budget of Dalton McGuinty, the Dalton McGuinty provincial Liberal government that included controversy-plagued “Ontario Health Premiums” tax.
Subsequently, he ran again for the same federal office in the 2006 election. The election results were basically a repeat of the previous election, with Tonks finishing first and Ferreira in second place.
On February 19, 2007, Paul Ferreira was sworn in as the tenth member of the NDP caucus in the Ontario Legislature. In the NDP caucus, Ferreira held the critic portfolios for housing, citizenship and immigration.
In his professional life, Ferreira served as the director of member relations for the Canadian Society for Training and Development. He also edited the society’s official magazine called the Canadian Learning Journal. From 2001 until 2004 Ferreira was an integral member of the executive team of one of Canada’s most renowned business intelligence companies. In the past, he served as North American manager of public relations for a multinational based in Britain. He also worked for two years as the manager of media and communications of the North American Broadcasters Association.

Paul Ferreira (born January 7 1973) is Paul Ferreira (born January 7, 1973) is a Canadian politician, and was among the very first gay openly politicians to be elected to provincial offices in Canada. He also holds been credited with being the first MPP from Canada that was Azorean-Canadian. The MPP was appointed into Ontario’s Legislative Assembly of Ontario as an official of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) on February 8th York South-Weston by- election of 2007 however, he was defeated narrowly in the general election of 2007. He later served as the chief of staff for party chief Howard Hampton until Hampton’s retirement from the position in 2009. He was later an assistant special to Andrea Horwath, leader of the party. On February. 8 of 2011, Ferreira was named one of the candidates for Ontario’s NDP for York South-Weston for the provincial election of 2011.
Ferreira started his career as an activist in politics in the year 1990, when he joined the New Democratic Party (NDP). After completing his journalism degree in Carleton University in Ottawa, Ferreira returned to Brampton and was the federal NDP candidate in the Brampton Centre riding in Brampton Centre in the 1997 election. He came in fourth place on the ballot.
He was also a candidate for Toronto City Council in the 2006 Toronto municipal election, finishing second in Ward 11.
