Dewar was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on the 25th of January, 1963 with parents Ken Dewar and former Ottawa mayor and New Democratic Member of Parliament, Marion Dewar. In third grade, Dewar was diagnosed with dyslexia after his teacher saw that he struggled to write and read. He received the Bachelor of Arts diploma in 1985 from Carleton University in political science and economics in the year 1985.

Dewar was born into the context of a Catholic family, however, Dewar was not happy with the church’s position on gay marriage, birth control and the rights of women. He joined his church, the First United Church from 2001 to the present.

In 2002, Dewar organized a Community Forum on Public Education. He has also been actively involved with the Coalition for a Healthy Ottawa, the Partnership for a Pesticide Bylaw, the Old Ottawa East Community Association, and Fair Vote Canada, and he has served on the board of directors of the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization.

Dewar ran for the New Democratic nomination in Ottawa Centre for the 2004 federal election. Several weeks after Dewar started his campaign, former NDP leader Ed Broadbent came out of retirement to also seek the nomination. After Broadbent won, Dewar went on to volunteer for Broadbent’s successful campaign in the general election, playing a major role in organizing the NDP election day effort.

Dewar was awarded the Bachelor of Education degree at Queen’s University in 1994. He then worked in the elementary classroom at D. Roy Kennedy Public School as well as in the role of the English educator in Hopewell Avenue Public School. His teaching students who have special needs led Queen’s University to award him the A. Lorne Cassidy Award.

Paul Wilson Dewar (January 25 1963 – February 6 February 6, 2019,) was a Canadian politician and educator who was who was from Ottawa, Ontario. The politician served as his New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ottawa Centre riding. that is Ottawa Centre.

After he had completed an Bachelor of Arts, Dewar took off for a five-month travel to Nicaragua and volunteered in the field as an aid-worker. After his return to Ottawa Dewar was hired as a constituency assistant for Ontario Ministry of Health and NDP Member of the Provincial Parliament for the Ottawa Centre, Evelyn Gigantes. Dewar worked in this capacity between 1990 and 1995. In this period when he met the woman he married, Julia Sneyd. They had two kids with each other: Nathaniel and Jordan.

While working at the schools, Dewar became involved with his union, the Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Teachers’ Federation (OCETF; a local of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario). After having served as a member of OCETF Executive and as the chair of their political action committee, he was elected Second Vice-President in 2001 and First Vice-President in 2004. During his time with the union, Dewar played a major role in reviving the OCETF’s political action committee and in establishing the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario’s Humanity Fund, which provides financial support to various charities doing work in developing countries, such as the Stephen Lewis Foundation. He took a leave of absence from his position with the OCETF in 2006 to run in that year’s federal election.
