Paul Danson is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Referee who was born on May 2, 1958 in Leicestershire, United Kingdom. Paul S. Danson (born 2 May 1958 in Leicestershire) was an English former referee of association football within the Football League and Premier League. When he was on the List the city he worked in was Leicester.
In the following years, the player was among its high-ranking officials, and often received important appointments, such as the historic First Division play-off semi-final on 17 May 2001 at Deepdale at which Preston defeated Birmingham in extra-time and penalties (Preston had missed a spot-kick within the time-limit of 90 minutes). The former Birmingham director Trevor Francis was said to be “visibly furious” after Danson moved the spot for the shootout from the empty area of the field towards the goal where the Preston supporters were (on instructions from the police) and then removed their players off the field to protest for a brief time.
Matters took a very different turn in the 2004–05 season. He refereed only three games in the top division of the Football League and was largely on lower division duty. At the end of that season he lost his place on the League List after a tenure of eighteen years. Potentially he could have had another two years before retirement and had that happened he would have completed twenty years and become the longest-serving referee since the 1920s. However, he did gain experience in Europe as a fourth official and assistant referee.
The breakthrough for him was in 1994. He was among three new referees named on the Premier List along with fellow Leicestershire official Peter Jones and Gary Willard from Sussex. The next three seasons the majority of his league games were played at Premiership levels (as was the norm for Premiership referees in this time). However, his performance were not always a success especially in a game played at Highbury with Arsenal as well as Sunderland on the 28th of September, 1996, in which two players from Sunderland and his Sunderland manager were dismissed prior to half-time. Then, at the end of the 1996-97 season , he was removed off the top Premier List and was then relegated back into Football League level.
