Coble was a member of the Wake County Board of Commissioners from 2006 until 2014 and was chairman for the committee from the year 2010 until 2012. The year 2006 was the time that Coble was looking to return to an elective position by seeking an unfilled seat on the Wake County Board of Commissioners. He was able to defeat Air Force veteran Rodger Koopman 54.42 percent to 45.58 percentage. Coble was Chairman of the Public Safety Committee and serves as a member of the Wake County Fire Commission. He was reelected as a member of this Commission during 2010, beating Wake County Attorney and former Wake County Democratic Party Chair Jack Nichols. Coble was Chairman of the Commissioners for two terms in 2011 and 2012. In his private life, Coble was in the insurance industry. His wife is Connie Coble and has two daughters, Courtney and Paige.
Coble, former U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding, and 2010 nominee Bill Randall ran for the Republican nomination. Former Winston-Salem city council member Vernon Robinson and Nathan Tabor, who ran unsuccessfully in the 5th district in 2004, had both planned to seek the Republican nomination in the 13th district in 2012, but Robinson instead ran in the 8th district, while Tabor declined to run as a result of changes made to the district in redistricting. On May 8, George Holding won the Republican primary with almost 44 percent of the vote.
Coble ran for reelection 2001, and was in a race against Democrat Charles Meeker. The first time he was on the ballot which had the turnout of around 40000 people, Coble received 49.15% of the votes, while his opponent received 47.65 percent. In the subsequent run-off , the voter turnout increased to 50,000. Meeker was able to defeat Coble, 50.97% to 48.87 percentage of votes. The next time, Coble ran unsuccessfully for an office on the North Carolina State Senate against Democrat Eric Reeves. Reeves took the seat by a margin of 49.29 percent of the votes, compared to Coble’s 48.39 percent.

Coble is the child of Jack Coble and Betsey Coble and is the nephew of late U.S. Senator Jesse Helms. He was a student at Needham B. Broughton High School, and earned the Bachelor of Science degree from Wake Forest University in business. He graduated in 1992 and obtained an Registered Health Underwriter qualification by Northeastern University.
Coble was on the Raleigh City Council from 1993 from 1993 until 1999. As a member of the Council Coble served as chairman of both the Budget Committee and the Planning Committee. He was also the Mayor Pro Tem. Councilman Coble was instrumental in reducing the tax rate by fourfold. Much like previous Mayor Tom Fetzer, Mayor Tom Fetzer, Coble was a conservative Republican. Coble was inaugurated as Mayor on the 7th of December 1999 following his victory in victory in the 1999 Raleigh mayoral race. Coble was Mayor until 2001. In the time Coble was Mayor and the city was required to respond quickly to record- setting 25 inches of snow storm . He also opened the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. Coble concentrated on security issues and advocated for the idea of prosecuting shootings under Federal laws.
In December 2008, Coble downplayed reports that he was considering running for Governor of North Carolina in the 2012 election, challenging Bev Perdue. Instead, he later announced that he would run for the U.S. House in North Carolina’s 13th congressional district, then occupied by U.S. Representative Brad Miller.
