Patrik Fitzgerald is one of the most popular and richest Singer- Songwriter who was born on March 19, 1956 in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Patrik Fitzgerald (born Patrick Joseph Fitzgerald, 19 March 1956, East London) is an English artist and singer who is the founder the folk-punk genre. A son of working class Irish immigrants, his parents started recording and performing during his punk-rock movement in the year 1977 after a brief stint in the role of an actor.
These early recordings drew attention by Polydor Records who signed him for the recording of his first album, Grubby Stories in 1979 which was recorded with a number of established punk artists like Robert Blamire of Penetration and John Maher of the Buzzcocks. The album contained 17 tracks, with 7 of which were recorded by the musicians mentioned above.
Now without a manager, Fitzgerald returned again to acoustic solo performance, then releasing a single under the pseudonym Josef Garrett, then, using a borrowed Revox, he began recording a series of backing tapes to use in live performance. These recordings, based partly on the former group’s unreleased material, with Patrik playing everything, were released in 1982 by Red Flame Records as his second album Gifts and Telegrams.
Following this, in mid-1983, Patrik Fitzgerald formed a collusion with a peripheral musician from the Ghosts, clarinet player Alistair Roberts, and along with three more brass instruments players he recorded his next LP, Drifting Towards Violence. The music on it is mostly acoustic, accompanied by the gloomy sound of the brass section and hard-hitting lyrics. Released by the Belgian label Himalaya the record went completely unadvertised, and, consequently, sank without leaving a trace. The release was followed by a solo tour of Europe, where Fitzgerald has retained a loyal following.
Fitzgerald was featured as a guest in post-punk’s documentary Rough Cut and Ready Dubbed in 1979/80. He contributed the title track “Island of Lost Souls” as well as an appearance in “Tonight” with Colin Peacock playing the keyboards.

The first songs he released were usually humorous, short pieces made with only an acoustic instrument and occasionally studio effects, with the lyrics that included a lot of social commentary. Fitzgerald was soon recognized as the first of his kind and was somewhere between a punk-poet or an urban folk- singer. He was often hailed for being “the new Bob Dylan”. When he first began his career as an entertainer, he approached David Bowie’s first manager, Ken Pitt, requesting his services. Pitt turned down the request, but an audition was arranged along with Noel Gay in 1975 who also declined Fitzgerald down.
In 1976, Fitzgerald auditioned along with Mick Jones and Tony James for the group London SS, again without any success. After a brief stint in a group of theatres that was communal (9 months at the Stratford’s The Soapbox Theatre ), Fitzgerald began to explore the growing Punk scene. He was a regular patron in The Small Wonder record shop in London and, at the time that Small Wonder launched a record label, Fitzgerald was among the first to put up a demo and was signed which led to the label releasing his initial three EPs, with one of which was Safety-Pin Stuck in My Heart, still his most popular work. The album is subtitled “a love song for punk music”. Patrik was a regular performer on London Punk gigs, and played with The Jam on their national tour.
In 1981, he released a five track 12″ titled Tonight EP. This recording was credited to a trio, Patrik Fitzgerald Group, comprising Fitzgerald – credited with songs, guitars piano etc., Colin Peacock – credited with synthesizer and guitar, and Lester Broad – credited with saxophone. Engineer was given as abbey. This EP had three tracks on side one – “MR & MRS”, “Animal Mentality” and “Tonight”. Side two contained “A Superbeing” and “Waiting for the Final Cue”.
