Born to an Lebanese mother, and Swiss father, he grew up to be a cartoonist in Singapore as well as Switzerland. He was also artist for New York Times and as cartoonist for Newsweek. His cartoons often reflect current events in Swiss and world news, like the 9/11 attacks as well as the growth of the Swiss People’s Party, and the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Chappatte is a resident of Los Angeles and Geneva.
Through the years he has worked with editorial cartoonists from conflict- ridden countries with the intention of encouraging dialogue through cartooning. The focus of these projects was Serbia, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Kenya and Guatemala. He detailed the work in the course of a TED presentation in 2010.
Chappatte visited the southern part of Lebanon in 2009 to see if people remain under the danger of time bombs in the form of bomblets made from cluster- munition. In the middle of his trip the editorial cartoonist crafted the report in comic book format called The Death of the Field. This report came out in the year 2011 as an animated document. It aired by Swiss and French television, and toured documentary festivals, and received the award from Australia.
