After losing the welterweight title Thomas moved up to a heavier division, and is now fighting at light middleweight. Thomas started his new division after he won his Welsh light-middleweight championship over Dave Davies, who had defeated Thomas three times in the amateurs in the beginning of 1977. The fight, despite being for the Welsh award, the fight was held on The Stadium in Liverpool, the match being John Conteh’s undercard to his WBC World Championship bout with Len Hutchins. Thomas’s light-middleweight fights were quite a bit more turbulent than his career as a welterweight. He was defeated his fight to Larry Paul, before beating Rhiney and losing to Tony Sibson. In 1978, Thomas had a long fights outside of Britain and had little results. Thomas was twice in the Netherlands winning and loss. Both was followed by three straight defeats against the former Olympic Lightweight Champion Chris Clarke in Canada and then French champion Claude Martin and finally Spanish fighter Andoni Amana in Bilbao.

After a victory against Jim Devanny in February 1976, Thomas fought Italian Marco Scano in Cagliari to claim an unclaimed European Welterweight title. Thomas was defeated to knockout in the second round. The fight came to an end with Thomas his second international match in which he faced Jorgen Hansen of Denmark; Thomas lost by technical knockout in the third round. After returning to Britain, Thomas successfully defended his welterweight title Trevor Francis, but then was stripped of the belt after Thomas was knocked down in Luton by Henry Rhiney in Luton.
