Pat Sheehan is the widower of Sinn Fein activist Siobhan O’Hanlon who passed away from cancer in the year 2006. He is the father of an son. Pat is also an avid cricket enthusiast.
On 7 December 2010, he succeeded Gerry Adams as MLA for Belfast West, Adams having resigned in order to contest the 2011 Irish general election. Sheehan retained the seat for Sinn Féin at the 2011 Assembly election.
As at August 2015, he is a Political Member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board.
In 1987, he was freed however, he was again convicted in 1989 for further offenses involving bombs, and was sentenced to 24 years in prison. He was released in accordance with the conditions that were part of the 1998 Belfast Agreement.

Sheehan was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 1978, he was found guilty of inciting an explosion and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Sheehan was 17th republican inmate of The Maze Prison to join the 1981 hunger strike that were aimed at getting political recognition in the case of Provisional IRA and Irish National Liberation Army prisoners. He began his fast on 10 August – a day after 9 prisoners were already starving into death. He was finished with the official declared to an end on October 3. He was able to last for 55 days with no food.
On 3 October 2006, Sheehan marked the 25th anniversary of the end of the hunger strike by reading the prisoners’ statement that ended the protest outside the gates of the now closed Maze Prison.
