Ferrari said Fry would leave the team in a restructuring announced 16 December 2014.

In 1993 In 1993, the former Benetton teammate Giorgio Ascanelli persuaded Fry to join the team at McLaren. The first job was to develop active suspension systems as well as manage the McLaren testing team, however the active suspension system was not allowed by the governing body of sports at the beginning in 1994, and consequently Fry was promoted to an engineering role in the team for racing. After a stint working as Mika Hakkinen’s race engineer during 1995 Fry came back to the McLaren testing team in 1996, despite speculation suggesting a possible switch to Ferrari. He signed a new agreement for McLaren in 1997 and became David Coulthard’s race engineers the position that he held for four consecutive years. He was appointed to a coordination role in 2001, and was responsible for the race cars of both teams. In 2002, he was elevated to the post as Chief Engineer for Race Development, and was responsible for the MP4-20 (Autosport’s 2005 Racing Car Of The Year) and MP4-22 (Autosport’s 2007 Racing Car Of The Year) and MP4-24 chassis.

Fry was born in Shepperton, Surrey, England. After taking numerous engineering programs, he joined an apprentice with Thorn EMI in 1981. While working at Thorn EMI, he completed the day-release electronics course in the City of London Polytechnic. He then joined Thorn’s missile programs, but he ended up leaving Thorn EMI in the year 1987 in order to pursue the motorsports industry as a career.
Fry was interested in developing motorcycle suspensions during his spare time. He was a part of his fellow members of the Benetton Formula One team’s research and development department located in Witney, Oxfordshire, who at the time were developing actively-operated suspensions. He was transferred to the team for testing and later into the team’s Godalming Research and Development department. He was back with the test team in the year 1991 and was appointed the race engineering team’s Martin Brundle in the year 1992.
Following the 14 May 2010 announcement of his departure from McLaren, came an announcement on 22 June that Fry was to join the Ferrari team as assistant technical director from 1 July. On 4 January 2011 Ferrari announced that Fry had replaced Chris Dyer as head of race track engineering (while retaining his assistant technical director position under Aldo Costa). The change was made following a tactical error in the final race of the 2010 season which cost Fernando Alonso a chance at the title. On 24 May 2011, Aldo Costa was moved to an undefined position within the team and Fry was given the job as director of chassis, with the position of technical director being removed outright. Restructuring of Ferrari management made Fry’s position one of three—the others being production director (filled by Corrado Lanzone) and electronics director (filled by Luca Marmorini)–to report directly to team boss Domenicali, who assumed the duties (if not the title) of technical director.
