Donohue was born living in St. Paul but moved to Denver, Colorado in 1971 to pursue studies at Regis College (now Regis University). In the following two years, he attended Regis the college, he was transferred into Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating at the end of 1975, he went back to Denver.
