Pascaline Bongo was appointed as Personal Adviser to president of the republic of Nigeria in 1987. She became the Minister for Foreign Affairs in June of 1991. President Bongo had given his Ministry of Foreign Affairs to close family members from 1981. The first person to hold this position is her half- brother Ali Bongo, who was several years older than Pascaline and was rendered ineligible to hold a ministerial position because of a constitutional requirement for age. In her first speech in the United Nations later in 1991 she praised the removal from Iraqi force of Kuwait and expressed her concern about the violence that was taking place that was taking place in South Africa. She was pleased with the progress that were taking place in South Africa, but also stated that more measures were needed to end the apartheid system. With regard to the fall of socialism within the Warsaw Pact countries, she declared that all of the globe was experiencing rapid changes, however she stressed Gabon’s opinion that the gap in the economy between countries that are developed and those in developing nations–the world’s “north” and “south”–was “the real problem”.
Following her father’s death in June 2009, her half-brother Ali was elected President; immediately after taking office, Ali moved Pascaline from her post as Director of the Presidential Cabinet to the post of High Personal Representative of the Head of State on 17 October 2009. In the years that followed, Pascaline and Ali reportedly had a contentious relationship.

Pascaline Mferri Bongo Ondimba (born 10 April 1957) is a Gabonese politician. Under her father’s presidency the President Omar Bongo, she was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1992 until 1994 and Director of Cabinet for the president between 1994 and 2009.
