Panicos Onisiphorou Demetriades (Greek: Panikos Onesiphorou Demetriades ; born 19 January 1959) in Limassol, Cyprus, is a Cypriot economist and professor of Finance Economics in the University of Leicester. From 3 May 2012 to 10 , April 2014 Demetriades served as the European Central Bank Governing Council member as well as the Director of the Central Bank of Cyprus. According to RePEC his rank is among the top two percent of economic writers in Europe. He is the writer of “A Diary of the Euro Crisis in Cyprus: Lessons for Bank Recovery and Resolution” Published through Palgrave Macmillan in 2017.

Between 1978 and 1981, he was a student in economy in Essex University. University of Essex where he received first-class honours for his graduation. His studies continued at Essex in 1982, where he finished the MA in economics and graduated with distinction. From 1982 to 1987,, he completed an PhD from Cambridge University under the supervision of Frank Hahn and Hashem Pesaran. Its title for his dissertation is “Essays on the Costs of Inflation”. In the course of his studies at Cambridge Demetriades received the Stevenson Prize in Economics, given to him in recognition of his work in the area of the relationship between the degree and the variation of inflation. In the year 2011, Demetriades was elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of the United Kingdom (FAcSS).

After earning his PhD after which he worked for 5 time within the Economic Research Department at the Central Bank of Cyprus. In the year 1990, he resigned from the Central Bank and joined the Department of Economics at Keele University which he joined in 1996. There he was appointed a the Reader in Economics. In 1997, he left Keele and was appointed to South Bank University as Professor of Financial Economics. He was there for three years. In 2000, he was promoted to the post he holds today being Professor of Financial Economics in The University of Leicester.
