Paddy Glackin is one of the most popular and richest Fiddler who was born on August 5, 1954 in Clontarf, Ireland. Paddy Glackin was born on 5 August 1954 in Clontarf, Dublin. The father of Paddy, Tom Glackin was a Dublin police officer and a renowned fiddle player. Tom inspired in Paddy an interest in and appreciation for the music of his home county, Donegal. He also taught him as well as siblings Kevin as well as Seamus playing the instruments. Because of the influence of his father, Paddy began playing the fiddle with a Donegal style at when he was six years old. In his early school years the violinist took classical instruction in the College of Music in Chatham Row in Dublin that gave him an essential technical foundation in music as well as helped him build his impressive technique. The way he played was, however, developed more informal at the home of his father, who regularly held Wednesday afternoon sessions of music with a variety of musicians, including Seamus Carroll, Larry Redigan and Frank O’Higgins. Seamus Carroll was particularly supportive and helpfulin teaching Paddy the methods of the Sligo- style fiddling.

Although Glackin is quite outspoken in his preference for a pure soloist approach to the tradition, he has been involved in a number of experimental recordings, including Roaratorio by the American avant-garde composer John Cage and Hidden Ground, a recording from 1980 made with the late multi- instrumentalist Jolyon Jackson which is notable for its use of synthesizers alongside Glackin’s pure traditional fiddle playing. The recording was a precursor to the trend to mix tradition Irish songs with electronic instruments.

Glackin accepted a position as an Archivist and Traditional Music Officer with The Irish Arts Council. Later, he entered broadcasting, securing an appointment with RTE Radio as an sports production presenter and then editor. In addition to his work at RTE, Paddy continued to perform and record Irish music. He made the first of a series of solo albums on his label Gael Linn label. The album is simply titled Glackin. album includes a variety of tracks made by the father of his son Tom along with his brother Kevin and Seamus the album is considered to be a classic in the music genre. The brothers would later release an award-winning duet album titled Northern Lights. Glackin has released a number of recordings that are seminal, like Doublin (1978) with piper Paddy Keenan and In Full Spate (1991) together with Donal Lunny. In the past, Glackin has released the duo album Seidean Si (1995) with piper Robbie Hannon, and Reprise (2001) with his former Bothy Band colleague, the late Micheal O Domhnaill.

On a trip towards Donegal together with father and music enthusiast Breandan Breathnach and Clare the fiddle-player John Kelly, Paddy encountered the music of famous traveling violinist John Doherty, who would be an influential impression on young musicians. Glackin is often quoted by Doherty as his primary influence. The musical influences of Paddy however, aren’t restricted to Donegal He also mentions fiddlers like John Kelly, Tommy Potts and Padraig O’Keeffe for the development of his style. With the help of his father as well as these skilled musicians, Paddy began to master various Irish styles and build an impressive repertoire. The year 1973 was the time that then-nineteen- year-old Paddy was crowned the world’s best fiddle player at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil.
