Owen William Paterson (born 24 June 1956) is a British Conservative Party politician who was Secretary of State of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs between 2012 and 2014. He was first elected the MP in North Shropshire at the 1997 general election.

Paterson got married to Rose Ridley, the daughter of Matthew Ridley, 4th Viscount Ridley and the sibling to Matt Ridley in 1980. They have two daughters and three sons. Their names comprise Felix, Ned and Evie. Paterson is fluent in French as well as German. He is a resident of Ellesmere North Shropshire and also owns an apartment located in Drome, France.

Paterson was first elected as the Member of Parliament for North Shropshire at the 1997 general election with a majority of 2,195 and has increased his majority at each subsequent election, up to 16,584 in 2015.

He joined his family’s company, the British Leather Company, in 1979. He became the Sales Director by 1983, and the managing director from 1993 until 1999. He was president of COTANCE (the Confederation of National Associations of Tanners and Dressers of the European Community), the European Tanners Confederation from 1996 until 1998. He was the director of the Parsons and Sons leather company in Halesowen during the 1990s. Paterson is a Freeman in London’s City of London and a Liveryman with the Leathersellers’ Corporation.

One of his first responsibilities was to oversee the preparation and distribution of the Saville Report on the events of Bloody Sunday in January 1972 that led to an apology from Premier David Cameron. He collaborated alongside the Treasury to implement his pledge of a consultation regarding the transfer of the ability to reduce the amount of Corporation Tax to Stormont. In October 2010 , he stated: “there’s a school in Belfast without pupils, and there’s one situated in Belfast with more teachers than pupils. It’s a waste of taxpayer money. We shouldn’t be able to continue bearing the burden of segregation. I’m not convinced that the British taxpayer should be allowed to pay for segregation.”

He reached agreements with the Ulster Unionist Party to re-establish the old ties with the Ulster Unionist Party and Conservative party that had been broken since 1972. The agreement included the running of jointly UUP/Conservative candidates in the 2010 European and general elections in 2010.

At the 1992 general election, Paterson contested Wrexham, but the incumbent Labour MP extended his lead with a 2.4% swing.
