Ossufo Momade (born 30 January 1961) is a Mozambican politician from Mozambique. He has been President of the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) the main opposition political party in Mozambique from January 17 2019. He was elected president of the party following the passing of their leader Afonso Dhlakama in the month of May, 2018 in a temporary capacity until the time he was elected as the party’s president in an internal congress in the middle of the year following. On August 1, 2019, Momade agreed to renounce violence and signed a peace deal together with Mozambique president Filipe Nyusi at RENAMO’s remote military base located in the Gorongosa mountains. The agreement led to the few remaining participants of the RENAMO insurgency releasing their weapons. The second ceremony of signing took place at the Mapotu Peace Square, which result in Momade declaring that he, along with members of RENAMO will now concentrate in “maintaining peace and national reconciliation.”

On the 26th of June, 2019 Momade was officially declared RENAMO’s official candidate for the Mozambican 2019 general election.

On August 1st 2019 The President Filipe Nyusi and Momade signed an agreement to bring peace and end to the six-year. At the time of signing, Momade and Nyusi also held hands and hugged one another. The peace signing ceremony was held at RENAMO’s secluded military base located in the Gorongosa mountains. Following the signing of the agreement the last of the RENAMO fighters gave up their weapons. Momade stated to that the Associated Press “We will no longer commit the mistakes of the past.” Momade also said “We are for a humanized and dignified reintegration and we want the international community to help make that a reality.” In a second ceremony of signing with Nyusi and Momade that was held on the 6th of August on Maputo’s Peace Square, Momade vowed to “maintain peace and national reconciliation.”

Momade is a native of his native Island of Mozambique when the region of Mozambique was was a Portuguese colony. He is the child of Ossufo Momade Jr. as well as Alide Zainabo. He was a student at Luis de Camoes Elementary School in the third grade, and upon completing the his fourth year in 1973, he transferred to Pero da Covilha Commercial School. In 1978 , at his age, 17 Momade was enlisted in the military.
