Osamu Higashio (Dong Wei Xiu, Higashio Osamu born on the 18th of May, 1950, in Kibi, Wakayama, Japan) is an ex- Japanese professional baseball player, who was part of the Japanese professional leagues from 1969 to 1988. He was also director of the Seibu Lions from 1995-2001.

Higashio was a sport commentator for a variety of television networks before joining the Lions in 1995 as manager. Higashio brought in a variety of high- quality players, and also recruited Darrin Jackson, and Orestes Destrade from the top leagues, but he ended up third during his initial 2 seasons in charge. The development of several youngsters, including Kazuo Matsui, helped put the Lions ahead of the pack in the third year of Higashio’s tenure and the team also won successive league titles in the years 1997 and 1998 (the Lions lost the Japanese championship series in both seasons). Baseball players Shinji Mori Daisuke Matsuzaka Fumiya Nishiguchi and Denney Tomori also came into play in Higashio’s managerial tenure. The Lions were ranked 2nd in 1999 and in 2000 before falling to 3rd in the year 2001. Higashio quit his position in the year 2001.

Higashio was often pitched towards the outside of the plate to frighten batters in the opposing career. He holds the Japanese record for hits for batters (165). He did not hesitate to throw his pitches near the batter, and displayed no remorse when hitting batters. When he was in the year 1986, Higashio took an admonition in the mound from Kintetsu Buffaloes player Richard Davis who had hit Davis with an errant pitch (Higashio continued to pitch after the incident, which was a victory). Many fans sympathized Davis and demanded Higashio be punished for hitting batters so often. Managers from opposing teams have accused Higashio of deliberately hitting batters, as Higashio had excellent control and there was no way that he would hit batters in a way that he did frequently. Higashio has claimed that he did not throw pitches with the intention of hitting batters.
