Orup (Swedish pronunciation Orup (Swedish pronunciation: [‘u:rop] Born Thomas Eriksson on November 29 in 1958) is a Swedish pop singer, songwriter, and guitarist who achieved huge success in his native country as well as Scandinavia in the latter half of the 1980s and the early 1990s, by releasing songs such as “Jag blir hellre jagad av vargar”, “Regn hos mig”, “M.B. “, “Da star pojkarna pa rad”, “Magaluf”, and “Stockholm”. Orup has also composed several songs for other artists. He wrote the song that won of Melodifestivalen 2004 “Det gor ont” performed by Lena Philipsson. Orup was among The judges of X Factor in 2012. Orup was also a part of season five of the Swedish television show Sa mycket battre, broadcast on TV4.
In 1986, a major label A&R Manager, Leif Kack, came upon a sample of Orup’s track “Vill du inte ha mina kyssar?” (Don’t you want to kiss me?) and recorded the track in collaboration with Bjorn Skifs. Kack has also signed Orup for Warners as an artist on her own. In 1987, during the summer, Orup released Orup’s first song “Ar det redo?” (Are are you prepared? ) A ditty that was a go-go that was released, achieving the top of the charts at number 19. In 1987, during the summer, Orup performed as the first act of the established group Roxette, Eva Dahlgren and Ratata on the Rock Runt Rikert Tour.
Orup was married to television presenter Sofia Eklöf 1989–1996. They had a son together, Kid (born 1991), a drummer and member of Tjuvjakt. Orup later remarried Pernilla, a patternmaker in the fashion industry, with whom he has a daughter, Charlie (b. 2001), and three sons: Isidor (b. 2000), Seth (b. 2011) and Ozzy (b. 2014). They live in the Mariatorget district of Södermalm in Stockholm.
In 1989 Orup came close second in Melodifestivalen, performing “Upp över min öron” (Up over my ears) as a duet with Anders Glenmark.
After Orup was dropped from Magnum Bonum, the band was ranked number one on the Swedish charts in 1978, with “Skateboard”, a Swedish-language version of “LA Run” (an American-sounding single from an British group called the Carvells and the Carvells, which only barely made it to the UK singles charts, but peaked at 31, in the year 1977). Orup was, in turn, was the first to have a minor hit by releasing “Kom och ta mej” (Come and take me) that was which was released by his band Intermezzo during 1979. The 1980s saw him founded and led his own Talking Heads and Devo inspired new wave group Ubangi (1982-1985) and then Thereisnoorchestra (1986-1987). Both groups were co-fronted by Cia Soro.

At the age of eight, Orup acquired his first guitar and tape recorder. The first track that completely captivated him was Beatles 1969 version of Ain’t She Sweet, featuring John Lennon on lead vocals. The song was introduced by Orup by his seven-year-old sister. Orup was an avid sportsman mostly ice- hockey as well as handball and football until the age of 12, when he started the first group, a black Sabbath-inspired heavy metal group, featuring Orup as the lead singer. When Orup was 14 years old, Orup created Magnum Bonum, a band that was influenced in part by American progressive rockers Styx. When he was 16, he wrote his first single, titled “I Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind”, for his group MBI An acronym that stands for the joint venture between the two groups Magnum Bonum and Intermezzo.
In the latter part of the 1970s, Orup began to appreciate Anglo-American punk rock. Their short and strong songs were a hit with Orup and later became his identity. Orup was a fan of British groups like such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash as well as American bands like MC5 and The Stooges along with The New York Dolls. While he was a fan of punk music, it didn’t reflect in his own lyrics. In the same time, he discovered the 1960s soul music and Motown styles that are popular for their short and powerful songs. Contrary to punk, this style of music greatly influenced him and was evident in his music from the mid-80s to the present.
