Orji Uzor Kalu is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 21, 1960 in Abia, Enugu State, Nigeria. Orji Uzor Kalu (born 21 April,1960) is an Nigerian Businessman and politician. He is chairperson of SLOK Holding and the Daily Sun and New Telegraph newspapers in Nigeria and was the governor for Abia State in Nigeria between May 29 1999 to May 29, 2007. Prior to his appointment Kalu was chairperson of the Borno Water Board and the chairman of the Cooperative and Commerce Bank Limited. Kalu was also an active part of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and chair of the PPA Board of Trustees. Kalu was also the party’s presidential candidate in April’s elections of 2007. In the present, he is a part of the party that is ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) following his official announcement of his resignation as PPA BOT chair.

On the 11th of July in 2007, Kalu was detained at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in connection with corruption allegations during his time as governor in Abia State. Kalu was later released on bail and charged of the Obasanjo regime of harassing him throughout and following his time in office the accusation was made by the former U.S. ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell in his book, “Nigeria: Dancing on the Brink.”

In December, Kalu filed a bail application at a Lagos High Court pending the determination of his appeal against his conviction. On December 23, 2019 the court rejected his bail application for lack of merit.

Kalu was convicted by the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court on Thursday, December 5, 2019 and sentenced to 12 years in prison for N7.65 billion fraud. He was convicted for defrauding the government of Abia State where he was a governor for 8 years using his company, Slok Nigeria Limited. Days after the court ordered the forfeiture of the company, Nigeria anti graft agency, Ecominic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC commenced the process of winding down Slok Nigeria Limited including The Sun Publishing Ltd which was not part of the charges. Consequently, The Sun Publishing Ltd approached a high Court in Lagos for interpretation of the judgment that convicted Kalu and Slok Nigeria Limited asking the court to compel EFCC to stay away from The Sun Publishing Ltd since it was not part of the court case. He was held in custody at the Ikoyi prisons in Lagos.

Kalu serves as the Chairman of Daily Sun, a Nigerian daily newspaper that was founded by Kalu and published from Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. The newspaper has 130,000 daily copies as of 2011 and 135,000 for weekend editions and an average of 88% sales. In 2011, the Daily Sun was the highest selling newspaper in Nigeria. It was the most popular newspaper in Nigeria. Daily Sun was incorporated on March 29, 2001 and was launched as a weekly publication on Jan. 18, 2003 and as a day-time publication on June 16, 2003. The newspaper has a similar layout in format to The Sun in the United Kingdom.
