Oren Safdie is one of the most popular and richest Screenwriter who was born on April 20, 1965 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Boycott This! encompasses conflict from the 1930s in Poland to a possible state of Palestine and, in the case of one Jewish tourist visiting Oaxaca, Mexico, spirals out of control after seeing a “Boycott Israel” poster. The play is based on an incident that Safdie encountered while on vacation during his time in Oaxaca, Mexico. Safdie performed an audience reading in the Blank Theater in Santa Monica, CA in 2013.

Oren Safdie had originally set out to be an architect, like Safdie’s father Moshe Safdie. He graduated with an architect’s master’s degree and was enrolled in his Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University in New York. This was a way, as he said, “to get closer to my dad.” In the final year of his studies the student took an optional playwriting class and became enthralled following his win in a contest organized through The Columbia Dramatists. He composed a 10-minute play in response to his experience at Columbia and presenting his idea before a panel of critics. It included three self-centered architects as well as one of his students. The result was Private Jokes. Safdie stayed for another four year at Columbia and earned his MFA at the level of Fiction Writing. Safdie was granted an award called the Woolrich Fellowship and established The West End Gate Theatre A student-run theater company which featured actors such as Oscar nominated Ethan Hawke and The Whole Nine Yards actress Amanda Peet. He became a playwright-in-residence at La MaMa back in 1996, and he produced the first ever Canadian Theatre Festival in New York.

Safdie wrote the 1998 film You Can Thank Me Later, based on his play Hyper- Allergenic. It stars Ellen Burstyn, Amanda Plummer, Ted Levine, Mark Blum, Mary McDonnell and Geneviève Bujold. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Newport Film Festival. It subsequently premiered on Showtime in the United States.

Fiddler Sub-Terrain, another musical collaboration with Ronnie Cohen, is a contemporary satire of Fiddler on the Roof set in the backdrop of politics in Quebec, Canada. It was produced in 2001 by La MaMa E.T.C. but was greeted with mixed reviews: “[T]he play is often not funny and sometimes hard to follow. Some of the humor nears gross-out status and gets to be too much; a lot of it is just sophomoric and barely generates a smile.”; or: “There is so much wrong with Fiddler Sub-Terrain that it is hard to know where to start. The acting is amateurish, the music tuneless and the lyrics insipid.”; and: “You don’t have to know Fiddler on the Roof to be bored by Fiddler Sub-terrain, the leaden new satire playing at La MaMa. But exposure to the earlier piece will most likely make it even more dismaying.”

La Compagnie, a character driven comedy set in the clothing district of Montreal and features characters from diverse ethnic and class backgrounds working for a small family-owned towel manufacturing company which supplies stores all over Canada. In a workplace filled with minimum wage workers, shady salesmen and bosses who are penny-pinching, everyone relies on one another. The middleman between all of these realms are Frank Casselli, a hard worker company foreman who needs to make sure that everything is running smoothly. La Compagnie was first produced at the Alma Shapiro Center in New York in 1996. It was it was performed in the hands of La MaMa E.T.C. The play was subsequently optioned to Castle Rock and CBS and the one-hour pilot comedy the script Fashion Avenue was composed.
