Orazio Attanasio (born 31 October 1959 from Naples) is an Italian economist who holds an economist from Naples. He is also the Jeremy Bentham Chair of Economics at University College London. His graduation from University of Bologna in 1982 and from the London School of Economics in 1988. Then he taught in the University of Stanford and was an National Fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution as well as an adjunct professor in The University of Chicago before arriving at University College London. In the present, he is an researcher of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) in London and Co-director for the Centre for the Evaluation of Development Policies at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and the director for the ESRC Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy.
In October of 2016, Attanasio won the 1 million Swiss dollars Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize for his “use of economic models and field experiments to assess and shape early child development programs and policies in low income countries”.
In 2016, Attanasio was also given his Carlos Diaz Alejandro prize by the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association and in 2017 , he was elected to serve until 2020 as the second vice-president of the Econometric Society.

In 2004 Attanasio was a coauthor on an IFS review of an initiative that was created to make life better for children living in small Colombian villages and towns by paying mothers to increase their children’s diets In return, the children of a younger age had to undergo regular medical checks and older ones had to go to school regularly. The project was launched in 2002 and funded by the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank The project was looking at how money to reduce poverty and encourage development could be directed at. Initial results were encouraging and showed more kids going to school and receiving better nutrition. Attanasio declared, “This evaluation is important, not just for Colombia, but to help us understand how developing countries can best target valuable resources to improve the prospects for their poorest children.”
