He played for Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Rockies (2005-2009), Texas Rangers (2011), New York Mets (2012 2013, 2013 to 2014) along with the Baltimore Orioles (2012).
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced August 11, 2010, that Quintanilla had received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for Methylhexaneamine, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
On July 20, 2012, Quintanilla was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for financial considerations. He played 2nd base for the Orioles. He had 4 home runs and 15 RBIs.
On January 3, 2012, Quintanilla signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. On May 29, 2012, Quintanilla’s contract was purchased by the New York Mets from Buffalo Bisons Class AAA International League after hitting .282 in 48 games. He first saw big-league action that same night, going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles in his debut against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field. He was designated for assignment on July 17.
The Rockies assigned him to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League (PCL). He was promoted to the majors in the middle of July. Quintanilla made his debut on July 31st and went 3-3. Over the next three seasons Quintanilla was a rookie playing at Triple-A Colorado Springs and was promoted to the majors at least every season. In a limited amount of at-bats, Quintanilla was the highest-rated hitter in 2008 with .238.

Quintanilla has attended Socorro High School in El Paso, Texas, where he was the leader of his city El Paso in home runs, RBI, and was elected to the Texas All-State shortstop. After graduation, he was awarded an academic scholarship for at the University of Texas, Austin and played for the Texas Longhorns baseball team. Quintanilla played third base, second infield, as well as shortstop and was a part of two championships at the national level which he won. He also played in collegiate summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Quintanilla was chosen in Quintanilla’s team, the Oakland Athletics in the first round (33rd overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. The year 2003 saw him was a player in the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League and High-A Modesto A’s of the Class A-Advanced California League. He hit .358 in the course of 40 games. The year began in Modesto being the Athletics seventh-ranked prospect, and after batting .315 was given a promotion in the late season into Midland RockHounds. Midland RockHounds for the Class AA Texas League. The 2005 season began playing for Midland as the 8th-ranked prospect in the A’s and on July 15 the club traded him together alongside fielder Eric Byrnes to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for the pitchers Joe Kennedy and Jay Witasick.
Quintanilla signed with the Texas Rangers after the season and in July 2011, he had his contract purchased by Texas after hitting .298 in 51 games with Round Rock Express of the PCL. On August 1, he was outrighted to back to Round Rock and elected free agency. Overall with the Rangers, he hit .045 in 11 games, with two RBI.
