In the elections of 2009, his main rival Hena Shahab was not a candidate and was seen in public only in a handful of meetings with RJD leader Lalu Yadav and their top campaigner, actor Sanjay Dutt. She didn’t speak at massive rallies, and only did a handshake. It was obvious it was conducted in Shahabuddin’s name through his well-oiled political machine, even though many among his band members like Rustam Mia and Dhruv Jaswal, Shubrati Mia, Munsi Mia and others , were in Siwan prison.
He joined Bharatiya Janata Party on 27 January 2014.

Om Prakash Yadav (born 23 March 1963) is an Indian politician and the National Vice-President of the Bharatiya Janata Party Kisan Morcha. The Indian General Election, 2009 the candidate got elected into Siwan’s 15th Lok Sabha from Siwan in the Siwan region, beating Hena Shahab with a margin of greater than 63,000 votes.
In 2004 Om Prakash Yadav ran in the general elections in 2004 as an JD-U candidate for the party and was defeated by Shahabuddin who was in jail at the time and was not able to fight elections as he was not still awaiting a conviction. The election was plagued by intimidation and opponents were unable to effectively campaign due to an atmosphere of terror. However, Om Prakash managed to gain over 2 lakh votes to defeat Shahabuddin. In the aftermath, there was a wave of violence against his then JD-U party.
Yadav was a member and contested elections for Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) party. However, in 2009, he was not selected to as the party candidate from Siwan Yadav decided to fight the elections as an Independent, and Siwan became one of the few seats in Bihar that did not go to the former JD(U)-BJP alliance.
