Augustus’s case was under scrutiny for several months, concluding in the year 2010. In the time between, Augustus was still competing in international competitions, but was forced to withdraw from a tournament in Belgium after receiving notice that her appeal was not accepted. Her ban was extended to February 2012, after the discovery that she participated in a competition that she was not eligible for.

She took part in the 2010 World Championships in Athletics, participating in the hurdles race and also the women’s 4×100 meter relay race in Nigeria. She reached the semi-finals in the hurdles event, but was later disqualified , and ended up finishing sixteenth in overall sprint relay race. The Berlin World Championships, Augustus was subjected to a urine and urine test by the WADA. The blood sample she received had no positive results, however her urine sample was positive for abnormally testosterone levels. The IAAF Doctor’s report stated that “This discovery could be associated with the administration of testosterone or related hormones. …”

Her career began with a victory at the African Championships in Athletics in 2006, beating competitors to take the 100m hurdles title. She then represented Africa in the IAAF World Cup, where she was eighth in the standings. In 2007 she added her All-Africa Games title to her continental title, fending against a challenge from her compatriot Jessica Ohanaja. She started competing on a global scale with appearances at the 2007 World Championships, 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, but she was unable to get over the heats phase at all of the competitions. She faced tough competition on the continental stage too and Fatmata Fofanah won the 100m in hurdles gold medal at Olympic Games in 2008 African Championships, leaving Augustus to take home the silver medal.

To contest the positive doping test and defend her case, Augustus (a United States resident) was required to attend the B sample testing conducted in Germany. If the B sample was also positive, she would then have to fly to Nigeria to present her case to a committee appointed by her country’s athletic federation. This committee would be the ruling body on her case. Although the doctor at USC concluded that the PCOS disorder caused the elevated DHEA levels in Augustus’ urine sample, these findings were rejected by the Nigerian committee. Augustus was ordered to serve the two year mandatory ban from IAAF sanctioned athletics competitions.
