They were married in the year 1979 in Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine and also have a daughter named Yevhenia (Eugenia) (b. 1980).
On the 18th of August, 2000 Oleksandr, an (along together with his dad Hennadiy Tymoshenko) board member of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU) Corporation (of which Yulia was the general director) was detained as was the company’s chief executive officer, Valery Falkovich. The two were charged with theft of $800,000 of public funds as well as creating fake customs documents in order in order to obtain gas imports from Russia and a number of other actions in the 1990s. In the month following the defendant was deported to an Zhytomyr Oblast jail so as to keep out communications among Oleksandr, Falkovich (who was transferred to the Chernihiv prison at the moment) and Yulia who at the time was also being detained. On August 8, 2001 Russian prosecutor handed information over to Ukrainian officials who were implicating Yulia as well as Oleksandr with customs violations. On the following day the Kyiv district court let go Oleksandr and Falkovich because there was no evidence. The prosecutor’s bureau, however, appealed the decision and kept the case going against Oleksandr and Falkovich, causing him to be sentenced to two years in hiding in order to keep from being prosecuted on charges that they claim are untrue. In a separate decision an appeals court in Kyiv district court ruled that the accusations against Oleksandr “groundless.” The charges were removed at the end of May, 2002. The father-in-law of Tymoshenko was also taken into custody in connection with the incident, but he was released in 2003.
