He is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology – NTNU since August 2017.
In 2011 Olav Bolland received an award called the Statoil Annual Award for Outstanding Research for his work in increasing understanding of carbon capture and methods for reducing emissions.
He was the director at the Gas Technology Center NTNU-SINTEF between 2008 to 2009. He was the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control from 2007 to 2013.

Professor Bolland completed his MSc and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) which is one of the predecessors of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology which is now NTNU. In 1990, he was an the Associate Professor of NTNU until his appointment as Professor in 2002 in the Department of Energy and Process Engineering. He was the Head of the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU from 2009 until 2017.
From 2003 to 2005, he was a contributor to his part in the IPCC reports, the organization that received in 2007 the Nobel Peace Prize. Professor Bolland was the lead writer for his work on the IPCC Special document regarding Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage.
