Ola Kvernberg (born 16 June 1981) is an Norwegian jazz musician renowned for his impressive string swing violin and his world-class performances. His parents are traditional music musician Liv Rypdal Kvernberg and Torbjorn Kvernberg. He is the elder cousin of folk musician Kari Kvernberg Dajani as well as the fiddler Jorun Marie Kvernberg. He is also the grandson of the famous fiddler as well as composer of traditional music Peter L. Rypdal. Kvernberg played classical violin since the age of nine and won the 3rd prize in the world’s most prestigious classical violin competition in Italy when he was 14 years old.

Ola Kvernberg Trio featuring Steinar Raknes (bass) and Doug Raney (guitar) released the album Cats and Doug (Hot Club Records 2002). Erik Nylander (drums) replaced Raney on the recording for Eboue’s Wolof Experience at (Moldejazz 2005). In Vossajazz the year 2006, they collaborate together with Vidar Busk and Hakon Mjaset Jrgensen (drums). The group (with Nylander and Raknes) released their album Night (Jazzland in 2006) featuring Kvernberg’s original compositions. People was released in 2009. The commission work Liarbird to the Jazz 2010 was released. For record Liarbird was awarded his prize, the Spellemannprisen 2011, which is a jazz class.

Kvernberg was born in Fraena. He started playing folk music at a young age, and was classically educated at the local music school. The first release of his record was by the group Fear of Flying in 1995. A year later at the age of 16 He began playing jazz and was taught in the Jazz program at the Trondheim musikkonservatorium (2001-03).

Kvernberg was discovered by chance following a chance encounter in the band Hot Club de Norvege in 2000 at an regular Django Festival in Oslo, in which he played together with Toots Thielemans. This led to the release of the an album Hot Club de Norvege presenting Ola Kvernberg and Jimmy Rosenberg (2000), the solo album Ola Kvernberg (2001), as well as his participation on the album Angelo is back together with Angelo Debarre (2001), that he also performed on during The Django Festival in January 2002. On April 2, 2002 Ola performed as the soloist for Jon Larsen’s Jazz orchestra White Night Stories, together with Hot Club de Norvege and Tromso Symphony Orchestra, and on two recordings of the project.

He played with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Philip Catherine at Moldejazz 2004, and was involved in the Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Quintet, the trio Gammalgrass with Stian Carstensen and Ole Morten Vågan, in The Scarlatti Ensemble with Kim Myhr, Eirik Hegdal and Marianne Baudouin Lie, with Siri Gjære’s Trønderhøns and as a guest in Banjovi with Finn Guttormsen, Stian Carstensen, Haakon Askeland, Kjartan Iversen and Knut Hem. In 2007 he was with Thomas Dybdahl on tour. In 2008 Kvernberg contributed on the Jon Larsen’s The Jimmy Carl Black Story.
