Okinoumi Ayumi is one of the most popular and richest Rikishi who was born on July 29, 1985 in Okinoshima, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. In his school days, he joined local sumo groups and competed in national tournaments however, he was not keen to make sumo an occupation, preferring to work at sea and take exams to become a mariner licensed. But, he was forced to drop off high school. He was introduced by a close friend to Hakkaku-oyakata. The first Yakozuna Hokutoumi who convinced him to join the Hakkaku stable.

He had two consecutive appearances at komusubi in 2013, however he fell down the rankings after four consecutive losses in the year following. After the January tournament in 2015, he was promoted to sekiwake from the comparatively low maegashira 6 rank which was a result of the failure of the majority of players just above him to record winning records. He was injured during his first sekiwake appearance and was forced to pull out of the event. Nine wins in May and 11 on July see him elevated to the san’yaku ranks his fourth consecutive time (three at komusubi while one was at Sekiwake). He was not able to hold the position with a score of 6-9. his record was also a losing record during his fourth try at komusubi in the month of May. He was able to pick up the kinboshi of maegashira 2 in July of 2016 and made a positive start to the September tournament, beating ozeki Kisenosato on the first day. He also defeated Kakuryu in Day 2, and Harumafuji on Day 3. On the sixth day, he had defeated two yokozunas and three ozeki. He was also the tournament’s unbeaten co-leader. But he started losing his second tournament week, and ended up with a score of 9-6. The tournament was rewarded to him for this effort with his debut Outstanding Performance Prize, and the opportunity to return to sekiwake. The tournament of November 2016 was not a success for Okinoumi who was suffering from an injury that forced him to miss the fall tour. The tournament ended with just a 5-10 score and was relegated in the maegashira rankings. In the November 2017 tournament, Okinoumi was second to Hakuho who had an 11-4 mark, and was awarded the third Fighting Spirit prize, shared with Aminishiki.

He was barred from the tournament in July as well as a number of others, following their admission of the involvement in illegal gambling on baseball. In the end, his return to juryo for the month of September. He was ranked at juryo 8 and 10-5 was enough to bring him back into the upper division of the November tournament in which he racked up his largest number of wins on the last day. His most impressive performance was at the tournament in January 2011, where the winner was yokozuna Hakuho and was awarded his first Sanho award to honor Fighting Spirit. The award saw him elevated to the highest ranking of maegashira 4 in this May’s “technical examination tournament.” He fought all of the top-ranked athletes at first, and beat three ozeki, Kaio, Harumafuji and Kotooshu. He lost his two final matches, in defeat to komusubi Kakuryu as well as Toyonoshima and fell to a make-koshi 7 but was able to maintain the same level for the following tournament. After securing the majority of wins on the last day of the tournament in July He was able to achieve his highest ranking of maegashira 1, in September. He scored his very first gold-star victory over Harumafuji during November of 2012 and then his third Fighting Spirit award at maegashira 7 in March 2013.
