Following his first nine professional fights, he posted a mediocre record of six victories and three losses, including losing by points in the fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. After this disappointing beginning of his career and defeat in the fight against Derrick Moon in October 2004, Fagan had considered quitting boxing, but was urged to stay on the mat by the former World champion Wayne McCullough. Fagan was then able to work out with McCullough and discovered the motivation to continue his boxing. He gave boxing a last chance.

In March 2007, Fagan suffered a loss to Paul Spadafora in a split decision over ten rounds.

Fagan was then fighting at the time of his debut title fight in December 2004, in a fight against Lee Cargle for the vacant Oklahoma State lightweight title. The arena was packed and the atmosphere was electric. Cargle struck the first important blows of the bout when he smacked Fagan by surprise with his right hand that landed directly across his jaw. Fagan believed the fight was over, but Cargle shook it away and returned with a string of blunders to take the first round.

The first time Fagan lost was in the face of Isaac Mendoza in July 2003. Mendoza handed Fagan the blow that broke his cheekbone and nose at three different places. Fagan did not want to see the fight stop until the fight was finished, but after ten seconds during the fight, the official called for a stop to the fight because of the bleeding.
