Boyd was a part of his team the Boston Red Sox (1982-89), Montreal Expos (1990-91) and the Texas Rangers (1991). Over the course of a 10-season career Boyd recorded a record of 78-77 with 799 strikeouts, and an impressive 4.04 ERA in 1389.2 innings.
On the 11th of May 1986, just prior to an event that took place in Oakland, Boyd smoked crack prior to taking the mound. The year 2012 was the time, Boyd stated to Buster Olney of ESPN “I get to the ballpark, all the ballplayers are on the field, you know, taking batting practice and everything. And I walk in the clubhouse and I–I got my pipe with me . . . I can remember going and locking myself up in the bathroom and smoking some dope right there at the ballpark.”
During 1987 spring training in Winter Haven, Florida, Boyd would be detained by police due to an issue concerning overdue video cassettes. When the list of titles made public turned out to contain pornographic titles, a Boston area newspaper printed the names and sarcastically dubbed the incident “The Can’s Film Festival.”
In 1987, Boyd would allege an encounter with police in which he suffered a hairline fracture to his pitching arm requiring surgery in August of that year. This limited him to 7 games and a win/loss record of 1-3 for his shortened season.
Boyd was the front-page story in the August 4 edition of Sports Illustrated. The story was entitled “Banned [but needed] in Boston.” Boyd’s problems in 1986 would culminate during the seventh and decisive match of 1986’s World Series when he was not able to make it. Red Sox manager John McNamara and Red Sox pitching coach Bill Fischer later claimed that Boyd was drinking and was intoxicated to be able pitch in the World Series.

Boyd was a student at Jackson State University. He was picked from baseball’s Boston Red Sox in the 16th round of the amateur draft. He made his debut during his debut season in 1982.
