After not being selected at the time of the 2016 NBA Draft, Ellis signed his first professional contract with the Montenegrin team Mornar Bar, of the Adriatic League. On March 9, 2017 Ellis signed as a player for team Alaska Aces, as their import for the 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. On March 18, however just three days prior to the first game of the team He quit the Philippines to take care of the needs of an “important family matter”.

Ellis began his college experience at University of Cincinnati during the season 2011-12. Ellis was kicked off the team during the off-season due to an altercation that took place at an evening club. He played for two years in Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. He scored 14.8 per game, 9.7 rebounds and 3.2 blocked shots while an red-shirt sophomore in the 2013-14 season, as well as being named the First Team All-America by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Ellis was instrumental in guiding his team of Cardinals towards their debut NJCAA Tournament appearance since 1999 with an impressive 29-7 record.

On January 27, 2020, Ellis officially signed with EuroLeague club Olympiacos.
