Obert Mpofu Biography

Obert Mpofu is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on October 12, 1951 in Southern Rhodesia, Zimbabwe. Mpofu who was previously governor Mpofu, who was previously the Governor of Matabeleland North Province, was named the Minister for Industry and International Trade in the middle of April 2005 following the March 2005 election to the parliamentary elections.

Mpofu was appointed the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure in February 2014 and served until 2015.

Mpofu was Minister of Macro-Economic Planning and Investment Promotion from 2015 until 2017.

Following the dissolution of the Cabinet of Zimbabwe in 2017, it was announced that Robert Mugabe’s successor Emmerson Mnangagwa had allowed only Patrick Chinamasa and Simbarashe Mumbengegwi to remain as acting ministers of Finance and Foreign Affairs respectively until the appointment of a new cabinet. However, Mpofu was appointed as Minister of Home Affairs and Culture in the new cabinet. Mpofu was later removed from the Mnangagwa Cabinet in September 2018.

When the ZANUPF-MDC national unity government was inaugurated on the 13th of February, 2009, Mpofu became Minister of Mines.

Mpofu was the mastermind behind the freezing of essential items in Zimbabwe during the middle of 2007. He was named by Robert Mugabe to lead the price- monitoring regime instituted following the price freeze. He revoked operating licenses from abattoirs across country following the freeze in prices, which that led to beef becoming difficult to find in stores all over the country. In the beginning of 2008, he proposed the concept of “people’s shops government- run retail stores that sell goods for sale at low prices.

Obert Mpofu was re-nominated as the ZANU-PF’s candidate for the House of Assembly seat from Umguza constituency during the March 2008 election for the parliament. Mpofu was initially declared unopposed. However, Mark Mbayiwa challenged this in the court, and succeeded in getting Mpofu’s non-opposed endorsement to be rescinded.

At the beginning of 2014, Mpofu was reported to be seeking nomination from ZANU-PF’s Matabeleland North provincial leadership for the position of party Chairman. It was reported that his main rival for the position was the Speaker of the Zimbabwean Parliament, Jacob Mudenda. It is believed that Mpofu was one of the earliest ZPRA guerillas to be trained for the Zimbabwean Liberation War way back in the 1960s.
