Orville Alton Thompson “Tommy” Turnquest CBE (born 16 November 1959) is a Bahamian politician from the Bahamas.
Turnquest was elected to the political scene in. He played a key role in the revival of the Torchbearers the youth-oriented part of the Free National Movement (FNM) which he was president of over a period of 4 years. On the 19th of August 1992 He was elected MEP of Mount Moriah and then re-elected during the general elections of 1997. He has held various post within the FNM including the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office, Minister of State for Public Service and Labor, Minister of State for Public Works and Minister for Tourism. The appointment of him as Minister for Public Works on 20 March 1997. After being elected leader-elect at an FNM conference in August of 2001 he appeared most likely to replace Hubert Ingraham as the next Prime Minister of the Bahamas. However, during the general election on May 2, 2002 Turnquest fell out of his district seat in favor of Keod Smith who was who was the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) candidate. Turnquest continued to serve as Leader of the FNM until the 10th of November in 2005, and was also the leader of the opposition in the Senate until the 2007 general election which saw him win back his seat in Mount Moriah, serving under the Prime Minister Ingraham. He was officially sworn in as National Security Minister National Security by Governor-General Arthur D. Hanna on 4 May 2007.
