Nurit Shany is an Israeli artist who was born on 22 February 1956 in Kibbutz Gvat, located in the Jezreel Valley, to the writer Yossel Birstein as well as the latter’s wife Margaret. When she was just five years old, older, she moved along with her family and her sister in Kiryat Tivon, a small town located in the Galilee which was where she went to an elementary school called Rimonim (1961-1969) as well as at the Haim Greenberg High School (1970-1974). At the age of 18 years old, she was sent into the Israeli Defense Forces, where she worked as a soldier-teacher at the Sde Boker Field School, directed by the sculptors Ezra Orion and Shalom Oren. At the age of 24 she got married to Ehud Shany and had two daughters.
The year 1997 was the time that Shany started a project for community artists that was dubbed “Connecting through Art”. The project utilized artwork created by teenagers of New York City and Jerusalem to decorate public spaces like The East Talpiot Community Center, the Kiryat HaYovel Community Center the Youth Division of the Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Keshet School and The Alin Hospital, the memorial site in the Katamon and others. It was financed with the help of the Jewish Agency and the “Partnership 2000” The Partnership 2000 program of the New York Jerusalem Foundation.
In 2010, Shany moved to Tel Aviv and set up an independent studio where she created a series of oil painting landscapes of ‘Tel Aviv seashores’. Her art was bought and auctioned by the Montefiore Gallery to art collectors Paintings from this series are in collections such as the Azrieli Collection, Schatz Collection, Shlush collection etc. Over the years, she presents in various exhibitions, in Israel, New York City and Habsburg, and her paintings are sold to Israeli collectors on behalf of galleries and auction houses. Recently, she has been creating a new series of paintings called “Paradigm Shift”. It generates images of famous worldwide cities in which terror events took place, and can be observed from two points of view, standing straight or upside down. Thus, Shany encourages thought about the humanity, which exists both in a physical and a mental space, composed of multiple realities.
As part of her involvement in the visual arts and as a significant element of it, Shany established, in 1994, a theatre that specialized in children’s stories, dubbed “Sipuran”. The theatre was in operation from 1994 to 2004, and mostly presented plays based on stories and songs of the Yiddish heritage as well as Eastern European heritage. The productions were commissioned by and supported by Beit Shmuel as well as Beit Shmuel and the Youth Division of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. She also performed as an actress-storyteller in adult shows alongside her father, the storyteller and writer Yosl Birstien, throughout the country for the Omanut La’Am organization. In these shows, she sketched on stage and painted and was purchased by the audience across Israel.
