Norman Joseph Watt-Roy was born 15 February 1951 located in Bombay, India. On November 5, 1954, the family of Watt-Roy comprised of Norman and his elder twin brother, Garth (born Garth Philip Watt-Roy December 27, 1947, Bombay, India) and his sister relocated to England. They resided in Highbury, North London, in which Norman attended St. Joan of Arc Primary School on Blackstock Road. When Norman was eight, the family moved into Harlow, Essex. When he was 8, he began learning some guitar chords from his father. He also participated in bands at high school along with his brother Garth who began playing the lead guitar around 1961. Norman dropped out of high school at 15 and was able to briefly study the art field in Harlow Technical College, and later returned to London.
In the 1970s and 80s in the 1970s and 1980s, Watt-Roy worked on session tracks and appeared on albums like Nick Lowe’s Jesus of Cool, Rachel Sweet’s Fool Around and Jona Lewie’s single “You’ll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties”. The singer also appeared on the album of the Selecters in 1981 Celebrate the Bullet and played on the Clash’s Sandinista! album, along alongside fellow Blockhead Mick Gallagher on keyboards. Watt-Roy played on the Sandinista! tracks that were recorded on Electric Lady Studios in New York City The tracks include “The Magnificent Seven”, “Hitsville UK”, and other tracks. Watt-Roy also played the bass on the Cut the Crap recordings. They also had drummer Topper Headon revealed in an interview recently that Watt-Roy played the bass for “Rock the Casbah” which appeared on their Album Combat Rock.
In 1972, Watt-Roy joined the band Glencoe, and met guitarist John Turnbull. The quartet released two albums, Glencoe, and The Spirit of Glencoe, along with three singles, and four recorded John Peel radio sessions before breaking up, and in 1974 they got together with keyboardist Mick Gallagher to form the nucleus of a band which, with the addition of drummer Charlie Charles, would become Loving Awareness (managed by Radio Caroline guru Ronan O’Rahilly). It was during a session with Charles for a friend in 1976 that they met both Ian Dury and Chaz Jankel and went on to play on the album New Boots and Panties!!, which was released in 1977 on the Stiff label.
The Loving Awareness quartet were later to join up with Dury and Jankel for the first Stiff Tour of UK and became known as Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Under the management of Andrew King and Peter Jenner, the original managers of Pink Floyd, Ian Dury and the Blockheads quickly gained a reputation as one of the top live acts of new wave music. They released two more albums on Stiff and several singles, achieving a UK number one in 1979 with “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick”.
The group was dubbed The Greatest Show on Earth and in 1969, they had signed an agreement to record with Harvest. The result was the release in February of 1970, of”Real Cool World,” the lead single “Real Cool World”, which became a big popular hit across Europe with the single reaching the top of the charts in Switzerland. The band’s debut album Horizons Horizons was followed by the follow-up album called The Going’s Easier, both released in 1970, as well as an additional track “Tell the Story”.

Norman Joseph Watt-Roy (born 15 February 1951) is an English musician who is also an arranger and composer.
In the early part of 1967, Norman forged the band known as the Living Daylights with his brother Garth and released one single from the Philips label, titled “Let’s Live for Today” (April 1967) and performed regularly at venues like The Angel Blues Rooms in Edmonton, London. In 1968, Norman as well as Garth created the group “The Living Daylights” which consisted of nine members and performed on tour U.S. military bases in Germany and Germany, as well as supporting American soul singers like Sonny Burke and played a summer residency at the Maddocks Club in Spain.
Watt-Roy’s music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s, during the punk and new wave era of rock music as the bass player for Ian Dury and the Blockheads. He had previously been a member of the Greatest Show on Earth.
