When he was in 1984 Breyfogle created a tale of six stories that was published in DC Comics’ New Talent Showcase. Mike Friedrich (President of Star Reach which is a talent representation agency) noticed Breyfogle’s work during the 1985 San Diego Comic-Con Art Show and was able to begin representing him. It was followed by a few issue of First Comics’ American Flagg as well as a second story called “Bob Violence” in 1985. In the same year, he also drew illustrations for Tales of Terror, a horror anthology that was published through Eclipse Comics. After that, Breyfogle wrote, illustrated and wrote the Captain America story in Marvel Fanfare #29 (Nov. 1986). Then he sketched Whisper in First Comics in 1986-1987, his first publication in a monthly format and then landed at Detective Comics starring Batman published by DC Comics.
In 2000, Breyfogle drew the Elseworlds three-issue mini-series Flashpoint. In 2001, DC offered him the job of penciling The Spectre monthly, which he drew for one year.
He spent 2003 penciling and inking the title Black Tide, published by Angel Gate Press.
Breyfogle studied at Northern Michigan University, studying drawing and painting in the midst of working as an illustrator at a local magazine as well as an illustration company. In 1980 Breyfogle illustrated a book entitled Bunyan the Lore’s Loggin’ Hero, published by Book Concern. He relocated into California from 1982. He was draftsman before becoming technical illustrator, designing an instructional Space Shuttle training manual for the United Space Boosters.

Norman Keith Breyfogle (/”‘ b r the oU g@l / February 27 1959 – September 24 in 2018,) was an American artist most well-known by his comic-book illustrations in the DC Comics’ Batman franchise from 1987 until 1995. In this period when he was co-creating characters like Ventriloquist and Ratcatcher along with authors Alan Grant and John Wagner as well as those character Anarky, Jeremiah Arkham, Victor Zsasz, and Amygdala along with Grant all by himself. He co-created with writer Gerard Jones and Len Strazewski the Malibu Comics Ultraverse main hero Prime and also did the writing and drawing for the Malibu Comics series that featured his own character Metaphysique.
Breyfogle began private art classes at the age 12 and was awarded an award at an art competition. The family later moved from Houghton, Michigan, and the local paper The Daily Mining Gazette profiled the artist in 1976, titled “Norm Breyfogle: Near Master Cartoonist at 16”. While at his senior year of high school, Breyfogle wrote Tech-Team the comic that was ordered by the local Michigan Technological University. The year 1977 was the first time he presented an idea for Robin’s costume. The design came out within Batman Family #13.
Teamed with writer Alan Grant, Breyfogle worked on Detective Comics. They introduced the Ventriloquist in their first Batman story together and the Ratcatcher in their third. He drew the Batman for six years (1987–1993), penciling Detective Comics from 1987–1990, then moving to Batman to introduce the character Tim Drake as the new Robin from 1990–1992, and finally starting a new Batman series for DC titled Batman: Shadow of the Bat from 1992–1993 which saw the Grant/Breyfogle team create three new characters, Jeremiah Arkham, Mr. Zsasz, and Amygdala. During his six-year run on the Batman character, he drew a few one-shots, two of them being Batman: Holy Terror, the first DC comic book to feature the Elseworlds logo, and Batman: Birth of the Demon, which he hand painted. He provided pencils to a 10-page short story in Superman 80-Page Giant #1 (Feb. 1999).
