Suppipat was a household name in Thailand as the CEO and founder of Wind Energy Holding (WEH) which became the South East Asian’s largest wind power enterprise in 2014 with a value in the region of $1.9 billion. After the coup d’etat of 2014 in Thailand Suppipat was compelled to leave the country following being accused of being a lese majoreste. He was granted asylum for political reasons from the French authorities, and has been able to settle in Paris.

Following the military coup of 2014, Suppipat was charged with breaking Thailand’s strict lese-majeste laws as part of the corruption investigation that implicated relatives of the former Thai princess Srirasmi. When he learned that he was indicted under the law on lese majeste that carries a penalty that can be 15 years or more on every count, Suppipat went to Cambodia on the 30th of November 2014, and stated: “I knew ‘112’ (lese majoreste charge) could mean that I would not receive bail… I was not willing to risk it.” Suppipat has protested his innocence, and claims that his charges were motivated by political motives because authorities believed he was close to the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Suppipat is known among well- known Thai academics for his pro-democracy stance. Suppipat has been granted asylum under the law by French officials and reside in Paris.

The allegations were flatly denied by KPN and Wind Energy Holding as they stated that all business activities have always been carried out in a lawful manner. Furthermore, Grant Thornton has issued unqualified accounts for WEH for 2015 and 2016. WEH has continued to thrive since the sale to KPN having recently raised US$1.14 billion of financing for its five windfarm projects in one of the single largest onshore wind farm financings globally. WEH has also signed 450 MW of turbine supply agreements with Vestas and GE for its five wind farms which will host the tallest turbines in Southeast Asia to date. Once complete, the five projects will make WEH the single largest wind farm operator in Southeast Asia.

In 2015, KPN had been accused of mishandling WEH funds, which surfaced after a former company accountant Asama Thanyaphan claimed to have been forced to falsify the accounts to conceal the withdrawals from shareholders. KPMG, the external auditor for WEH, resigned shortly afterwards, refusing to endorse the 2015 accounts. Grant Thornton was appointed as WEH’s auditor and were made aware of all of the allegations.

The year 2009 was the time that Suppipat established Wind Energy Holding (WEH) with REC as the holding company, and Pradej Kitti-itsaranon as the CEO of the engineering group SET listed on the SET exchange Demco Plc as a minority shareholder. Suppipat launched two wind farms in the province of Isan that can generate 207 megawatts of power as well as with additional projects on the way. WEH expanded to become the largest Southeast Asian wind energy company , valued at $1.2 billion, and is preparing for its first publicly traded offering.
