The 1995 season marked a major breakthrough for Montalvo when she took home the triple jump gold and the long jump gold at the 1995 Pan American Games before going on to claim her first world championship – with a leap of 6.86 meters that earned her an silver medal in the same event as Fiona May in the long jump final of the 1995 World Championships in Athletics. Her luck was not always the best in triple jumps that year and finished sixth at the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships, however she placed 15th in the qualifying for the championships outdoors.
