Nisha Pahuja (born 1978) is an independent Canadian filmmaker from New Delhi and raised in Toronto, Ontario. This writer/artist/director was introduced to film through studying English literature, working in social services and through working as a documentary researcher. She is currently being a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Fellow. Her first feature film was in 2003 with Bollywood Bound, and more recently she created a documentary The World Before Her (2012) that examined the different ways of life of women who compete for the title of Miss India and juxtaposing it with Hindu Nationalists who defend their ideals.

The making of Pahuja’s most highly acclaimed film could not have been as successful were it had it not been for the fundraising funding it received via an online crowdfunding fund. The World Before Her was an film that ignited the attention of a few internationally-based broadcasters in Toronto However, it was difficult to produce due to financial limitations. Following the Dehli Gang sexual assault case, Nisha was determined to show her film throughout India in order to aid women who were under-valued. To fulfill her goal, Nisha created a Kickstarter with the aim of achieving $50,000 to show the film in India as well as to various social workers in order to bring about changes in the political landscape. The kickstarter exceeded its initial target by achieving $57,000.
